Power Grid Interconnection Intern - Renewable Energy

The Exus Project Development department is seeking a Power Grid Interconnection Intern for our Summer 2024 intern program out of our corporate HQ Pittsburgh, PA office. This is a paid full-time position. Anticipated duration will be approximately 8 weeks (June to August 2024 timeframe). Duration, start, and end dates are flexible to each candidate’s school schedule.  This position has the potential to transition into a full-time role upon graduation. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the VP of Transmission and VP of Technology, and partner with development project directors/managers to achieve various projects.

Description and Responsibilities:

Exus is seeking a Power Grid Interconnection Intern to use commercial tools and power system analytical tools (PSS/E, Power World, PSCAD, etc.) to support the development of renewable energy (wind and solar) and BESS projects’ interconnection screening and risk assessment process within Exus. The intern will participate in renewable project development meetings with the project development directors and managers and obtain a full scope understanding on renewable energy project development life cycle and M&A issues.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Understand the workflow of renewable energy project organization, M&A, interconnection study and design.
  • Understand the OATT Tariffs on large generation interconnection at RTOS (PJM, MISO, ISO-NE, NYISO, SPP, ERCOT, CAISO) and TP Zones (PNM, BPA, etc.). Track the queue reform progresses at the associated regions under FERC Order 2023.
  • Learn and apply knowledge of the commercial interconnection tool (Orennia) on energy project interconnection screening analysis.
  • Partner with the GIS Technology team on assigned project as needed.
  • Perform power flow analysis and OPF studies, if needed, for assigned renewable and BESS project interconnection screening and risk assessment with anticipated power grid congestion and interconnection queue request patterns.
  • A presentation session at the end of the program will be required to present the work accomplishment to the entire company.


  • A Graduate student with major on power systems, currently enrolled and attending an accredited college or university.
  • Willing to work at the Exus Corporate HQ office in downtown Pittsburgh, PA for the duration of the program.
  • Motivated and detail-oriented with an interest in renewable energy development.
  • Proficient in standard MS Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of steady state power flow analysis.
  • Knowledge of optimization methods including linear programming.
  • Interest in exploring complicated industry processes with uncertainties.
  • Outstanding quantitative skill sets.
  • A team player with enthusiasm for learning, pushing technical limits and finding solutions for resolving complex technical challenges.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to gather information, conduct analyses, write a report summary, and present findings to Company management.
