Commercial Intern - Renewable Energy

Exus Management Partners is an independent investment and asset management firm focused on the renewable energy sector (wind, solar, and battery storage). Exus is seeking a Commercial Intern for our Summer 2024 intern program out of our Pittsburgh, PA office. This is a paid full-time position. Anticipated duration will be 8-10 weeks (June through August 2024). This position has the potential to transition into a full-time role upon graduation. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Commercial Director and Commercial Manager and partner with commercial analysts and data engineers to achieve various projects.  The Commercial team works to help support Exus’ renewable energy goals through energy market analysis, reporting automation, risk management and supporting our database buildout. The team has a start-up-like culture that requires innovation and agility from all team members. The ideal candidate will have a combination of technical proficiency, experience with data analysis, strong communication skills, attention to detail, and high levels of organization.

Description and Responsibilities:

Project: Support Database Buildout

  • The intern will work with the Commercial Director, Energy Analyst, and Operations Engineers to support the buildout of the internal database by:  
  • Creating and editing python scripts to extract relevant datasets.
  • Creating scripts, in python or SQL as appropriate, to feed datasets into the database.
  • Scrubbing data, ensuring quality of information.
  • Building processes to continuously monitor quality of information once it is incorporated into the database.
  • Creating relevant documentation.

What does success for this project look like?  By the end of the 8–10-week internship:

  • All relevant Commercial data has been integrated into the database.
  • Effective data quality measures and monitoring processes have been put in place.
  • All required documentation has been created.
  • A presentation will be given at the end of the summer to the Company detailing the project.

Project: Standalone Battery Storage Analysis

  • The Intern will utilize different market research software to create a summary of market fundamentals, revenue streams, and incentives amongst a number of energy markets (ERCOT, NE ISO, CAISO, PJM, etc.).
  • Pulling historical price and capacity data for ancillary revenue sources.
  • Documenting the ancillary services available across the different markets.
  • Support the buildout of a battery optimization business case, working alongside the Commercial Manager and Commercial Analyst.
  • A presentation will be given at the end of the summer to the Commercial group detailing the progress and knowledge gained on battery storage.


  • An undergraduate Junior or Senior, currently enrolled and attending an accredited college or university.
  • Willing to be in Pittsburgh, PA for the duration of the intern program.
  • Pursuing Bachelors in Energy Economics, Energy Finance, Computer Science, Environmental Studies, Renewable Energy, or related field.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Self-motivated, detail orientated person with a focus on process improvement.  
  • Must have an interest in sustainability, renewables, and/or energy markets. Specific interest in battery storage is a plus.
  • Display strong analytical skills, including the ability to gather information, conduct analyses and present findings.
  • Strong computer skills, with a focus on proficiency in Excel, Power BI, and Python.
  • Ability to extract, manipulate, and summarize large amounts of data.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; this position involves data analysis and process improvement efforts that will require close teamwork with the Commercial department analysts.
